Documentation

There are six ways to get glaze onto your machine, which is about four more than a tool this size needs. Pick the one that matches how you already install things and ignore the rest. The package is called glazier, the binary is called glaze, and yes, I know.

Requirements

  • Go 1.26+, to build from source only.
  • tmux on your PATH.

Glazier supports only Linux and macOS. Each package below installs the glaze binary and also installs tmux as a dependency: the Homebrew formula and the .deb, .rpm and .apk packages all depend on tmux. A release zip, go install and a source build install only the binary. Install tmux yourself for those three.

With Homebrew

The tap works on macOS and Linux.

Console
$ brew install wilhelm-murdoch/tap/glazier

With a .deb, .rpm or .apk package

Each release includes a .deb, an .rpm and an .apk package for amd64 and arm64. Download the package for your system, then install it. Replace amd64 with arm64 for an arm64 system.

Debian and Ubuntu:

Console
$ curl -LO https://github.com/wilhelm-murdoch/glazier/releases/latest/download/glazier-linux-amd64.deb
$ sudo apt install ./glazier-linux-amd64.deb

Fedora:

Console
$ curl -LO https://github.com/wilhelm-murdoch/glazier/releases/latest/download/glazier-linux-amd64.rpm
$ sudo dnf install ./glazier-linux-amd64.rpm

Alpine:

warning

Verify the .apk package before you install it. The package is not signed, so apk cannot check it. See Verify a release file.

Console
$ curl -LO https://github.com/wilhelm-murdoch/glazier/releases/latest/download/glazier-linux-amd64.apk
$ apk add --allow-untrusted ./glazier-linux-amd64.apk

From a GitHub release

Each GitHub release includes prebuilt binaries for Linux and macOS on amd64 and arm64. The binaries are version-stamped and packaged as zips, for example glaze-darwin-arm64.zip. Each release also includes a SHA256SUMS file and a signed build provenance attestation.

  1. Download the zip for your system and the SHA256SUMS file from the release page.
  2. Verify the zip. See Verify a release file.
  3. Unpack the zip.
  4. Move the glaze binary to a directory on your PATH.
Console
$ unzip glaze-darwin-arm64.zip
$ mv glaze /usr/local/bin/

Verify a release file

The checksums and the attestation cover the zips and the .deb, .rpm and .apk packages. Run both checks in the directory that holds the file and SHA256SUMS.

  1. Check the checksum of the file against SHA256SUMS.
Console
$ shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing
  1. Check that the release workflow of this repository built the file. The check needs the GitHub CLI.
Console
$ gh attestation verify glaze-darwin-arm64.zip --repo wilhelm-murdoch/glazier

The first check proves that the file did not change after the release. The second check proves that GitHub Actions built the file from this repository, so a file that someone built elsewhere fails it. Do both. The checksum file sits next to the files it describes, so on its own it only proves that a download was not corrupted.

From source

These commands build and install the version-stamped glaze binary with go install.

Console
$ git clone https://github.com/wilhelm-murdoch/glazier.git
$ cd glazier
$ make install

With go install

Console
$ go install github.com/wilhelm-murdoch/glazier/cmd/glaze@latest

glaze --version shows the version that go install built, for example v0.1.7.

Build a local binary

This command compiles the binary for your system and writes it to bin/<os>-<arch>/glaze, for example bin/darwin-arm64/glaze on Apple silicon. Set GOARCH to build for a different architecture.

Console
$ make build

Check the installation

  1. Print the version. The output shows the version, the stage, the commit and the build date.
Console
$ glaze --version
  1. Check that tmux is on your PATH.
Console
$ tmux -V

Put --version before a command. glaze up -v is a usage error and exits with code 2. See Global flags.
